AFGHAN LAPIS LAZULI WIREWOUND RING
with a history of thousands of years, Winding is an ancient skill which originated in Europe and Americas. The crafts worker use metal wires and simple accessories and tools to create ever-changing ornaments through winding and twisting methods. Through this method, welding and casting is not necessary. Whereas industrialized jewelry can be cheap and is evermore popular, wire-wound jewelry is not standardized and allows for much creativity of the crafter. Lazuli (Lazurite / Lapis Lazuli) has a deep blue color and is a relatively rare gemstone. Afghanistan has been an important source of lapis lazuli for centuries, and the locals also regard it as the “national stone” of their country. Lapis in Afghanistan is produced in the lapis lazuli area of Badakhshan Province, located in the Kokchi River Basin in the east of the Hindu Shiku Mountains.
